This is (so far) an experiment. I love words. I try to write down words when I read (or underline them, and then go back and write them down). Sometimes they are words I don't know. Sometimes they are words I have looked up over and over and simply cannot seem to remember exactly what they mean. Sometimes they are just words I like and want to work into my own lexicon.
Here are some I came across in the (marvelous) noir novel Respirar por la herida, by Víctor del Árbol
Incólume – unhurt, unharmed
Tugurio – hovel, dive, den
Amerizaje – landing, touchdown, splashdown (transport)
Fular – silk scarf (from foulard)
Testaferro – frontman, dummy, front
Desahuciar – evict, declare terminally ill, be a lost cause, give up hope
Desfalco – the amount embezzled
Fuelle – bellows (or pleat, or stamina)
Cicuta – hemlock
Desmejorar – spoil, waste, deteriorated. Está desmejorado: lost his looks
Ufano – smug, conceited, self-satisfied
Achatado - flattened
Indulto – pardon, reprieve
Tuero – similar to a log
Insuflar – breathe life/hope/air into
Apeadero – unstaffed station
Zueco – clog, flat shoe
Cabeza de turco - scapegoat
Trenca – duffle coat
Añil – indigo
Parangón – comparison (e.g. no tiene…)
Arma blanca – a weapon that is not a fire-arm (knife, etc)
Premura – urgency
Desgañitarse – shout one’s head off
Hierático – inscrutable, inexpressive
Inopia – indigence
Cerciorarse – assure onesself, make sure
Alféizar – windowsill
Dadivoso – charitable, giving
Piorrea – gum disease
Minuta – draft, bill (for a lawyer)
Bisoñez – inexperience
Díscolo – disobedient, unruly
Trasvasar – transfer, decant
Peritaje – expert
Sisa – bit on the side, dishonest profit, pilfering (and: armhole!)
Perola – saucepan
